When Beauty Trends Meet Eye Health: How Dr. Janice Luk Is Bridging Two Industries

Dr. Janice Luk’s career has always been marked by curiosity—but lately, that curiosity has evolved into something bigger:
a mission to bridge the growing gap between beauty trends and eye health.

As clinicians, we're taught about the negative eye health consequences, particularly in the world of lash extensions, lifts, tints, and cosmetic procedures. Rather than dismissing these practices, Janice saw an opportunity for education.

Her approach is rooted in empowerment, not prohibition—helping patients make informed choices without taking away the things that make them feel confident and expressive.

From Curiosity to Collaboration

Janice personally likes beauty trends—the lash extensions, lifts, and tints—and she openly acknowledges that she’s participated in many of them herself.

What she discovered was an opportunity to educate.

“We shouldn’t just be telling patients not to do something. It’s their body. How do we empower them to make the best choices about their eye health while still continuing these beauty trends that make them feel good?”

Learning Outside Optometry

One of Janice’s most pivotal recent experiences came not at an optometry conference—but at LashCon, a major industry event for lash artists.

“LashCon was even bigger than some of the optometry conferences I've attended. And it hit me—our patients are part of this world, and we don’t understand it.”

Instead of dismissing the space, Janice leaned in—listening, learning, and building relationships. That mindset now underpins much of her work.

“It’s a two-way street. I learn so much from beauty professionals, and they also need digestible, credible eye-health information.”

What She’s Building Now

Recently, Janice launched an accessible online eye-health course for lash artists, intentionally priced so cost wouldn’t be a barrier.

But she’s not stopping there. Her next project, Eye Beauty Collective, is an educational and community platform focused on understanding beauty trends and their ocular implications.

“My current mission is bridging the gap between beauty and eye care. That’s the premise of everything I’m doing right now.”

Optometry As A Launchpad

Beyond beauty and dry eye, Janice’s work reflects a bigger idea: optometry as an amazing launchpad.

“We graduate thinking this is it—refracting, diagnosing, treating. But optometry can lead to speaking, consulting, education, building brands, collaborating with other industries. The world is your oyster.”

For Janice, work happiness isn’t about balance—it’s about alignment.
