Want Better Ideas? Embrace Boredom

Want Better Ideas? Embrace Boredom

Remember when you had a eureka moment while taking a shower or folding laundries?

It's not a coincidence.

Being bored activates part of the brain called default mode network (DMN), which is linked to imagination and creativity.

Unfortunately, in this digital age, any free time we have is quickly consumed by distractions like social media, music, podcast, or YouTube.

Think about it. When is the last time you took a long walk or folded laundries without YouTube or podcast playing in the background?

We're rarely bored nowadays, and that's a huge problem for busy professionals who are stuck in the daily grind.

Embrace Boredom

Many professionals are overwhelmed by the ever-increasing demands of work and life, which is why protecting our limited free time from distractions becomes even more critical.

Boredom creates space for deep internal reflection. A space to ask yourself:

  • Where am I headed in life, and is that still where I want to go?
  • Is there something I'm forgetting to prioritize?
  • Am I living my purpose?

Without such reflections, busy professionals are perpetually stuck in the daily grind, as their days blur into years. I know this because I've been there.

After a busy work day, I'd watch shows mindlessly, scroll on social media, then get ready for the next work day. Unbeknownst to me, I was silently burning out for years.

If I had taken the time to pause for even just 10 minutes a day (like taking a walk without music), I probably would've heard my inner voice a lot sooner.

Make It a Habit

Lately I've made it a habit to take daily walks without my phone (though my wife isn't thrilled that she can't track me). Even on the busiest of days, I'll go on a 5-minute walk around the block.

It's a simple habit, but it's led to some of my best ideas.

So next time you're stuck on a tough problem or an important decision, stop trying to think harder. Take a walk, vacuum the house, or fold the laundry. You might just be rewarded with a breakthrough insight.

And if nothing else, you'll end up with a clean house. A win is a win!
