A Quote Every High-Achiever Needs to Read
I came across a quote that I think everyone needs to hear:
"What a privilege to be tired from the work you once begged the universe for.
What a privilege to feel overwhelmed by growth you used to dream about.
What a privilege to be challenged by a life you created on purpose.
And what a privilege to outgrow things you once had to settle for."
– Miles Adcox, Thought Leader on Emotional Wellness
As high-achievers, we're constantly looking ahead – the next milestone, the next challenge, the next big accomplishment. But how often do we look back at all that we've achieved?
Reading this quote was like a brake check for me. And in that moment, I reflected on all the years I dedicated to become an optometrist, the health scare I had to overcome, and the life I am building with my wife and daughter. It's not always easy, and it took a lot to get to where I am. Looking back gave me a healthier perspective of where I was then and where I am now.
If Your Younger Self Could See You Now...
On a recent podcast episode, I sat down with Dr. Kevin Chan, a respected medical writer and key opinion leader on myopia control. Despite his impressive list of achievements, he shared that he doesn't feel "successful" all the time.
His humility motivates him to continually grow his expertise, and I have no doubt it's played a part in his success. But if someone as accomplished as Kevin is still striving for more, would I ever feel like I've done enough?
At the end of the podcast, we ask everyone this reflective question:
"If your younger self could see you now, what would they say?"
After some thought, Kevin said, "he'd be proud, I think... Proud and grateful for the career I've built."
He isn't alone in feeling this way. Our guests consistently answer with a sense of gratitude. And if I asked you the same question, I'd bet that you'd have a similar answer.
Think about your own journey and all the challenges you've overcome in work and life. Think of all the time and energy you poured into achieving your goals to be where you are now.
When we're busy charging ahead, we forget to check the rearview mirror.
You don't have to stop striving for more, but don't let the pursuit of what's next overshadow all that you've accomplished. And wherever you are on your journey, I hope you take a moment to appreciate how far you've come, and give yourself a little credit for getting here.
